There is a gray area between plagiarism and copying which has been proved through this art class. In the beginning, there was not a reasoning behind the difference but now I understand the difference. Plagiarism is creating an exact replica of another artist work and claiming it as your own. Copying is being inspired by another artist work and creating your own version of the piece. During this class I did a project copying an others artwork were I did a North Carolina string art project and found a way to make it my own. There are many reasons why artist make art which is one of the major things I have learned through this class. At First, I thought that artist only made art to express themselves. I have found that there is so much more to art than self expression. To make art you have to be inspired and then proceed to make your own way. I make art because I really love to do it. I enjoy the process of making art the challenges you face. Occasionally, I get frustrated with it and have to take a break from art but I always come back to making art especially painting. An artist may also make art to please other so they can enjoy art as well. There is no singular answer to the question, "Why do artist make art?". I have learned a lot of different artistic styles and what time periods they tend to belong with. Starting the year, I only knew a few types of artistic styles for example: realistic, graphic, animated, and abstract. So little knowledge about the different styles which really limited me. Learning new style has helped me grow and improve as an artist and I have even practiced these different styles. Also I began to incorporate these styles in my art work. Some of the new artistic styles are conceptual, realistic, fine art, abstract, modern, contemporary, and many more.

I was inspired by the dogs in a lot of paintings in the North Carolina Museum of Art. Many of the pieces in the museum are very realistic which is similar to my style of painting as well. Also there was a portrait of a man with gold around the edge of the painting which is also what I did for my painting. I really enjoyed painting this dog because I might be one of my best paintings I have ever done. I received a lot of constructive criticism while I was painting and it definitely helped me improve and grow as an artist.
I tried a new technique with in this project. Other people in my class drew different parts of different animals. Then, I combined them all together to make a crazy monster. Normally, I do not do a pen and ink technique which is what I ended up doing. It was very out of my comfort zone because I didn't really control what the drawing looked like. It was also a risk to do the drawing in pen and ink. I destroyed my ceramic turtle that I made for artist observe. That turtle took a lot of time and effort and it didn't turn out how I wanted it to. So, we took the turtle to the woods and let it go for a swim. He then disappeared the next day and I haven't seen him since. For this pumpkin painting my limitation was using the sticks that come with the canvas to paint the pumpkins. Obviously it is an unfinished project it is a snapshot. This limitations caused many problems like trying to get enough paint from the stick to the painting. It was also difficult to get different colors to mix and create shading. For this project I decided to paint pumpkins and gourds to go with fall and fall theme. When I decide to paint this I thought hard about what I could do as a limitation. Then I saw the sticks that you use to tighten the canvas and I thought "Aha that would be difficult to paint with" so I started and I learned many different techniques to paint with the sticks. I used some of the mistakes in the techniques as a learning opportunity. I felt I responded well to the challenges of this painting. At times I over blended and changed it in the next so I have learned a lot from this project. It is okay to copy if you create your own version of the art. Not okay to copy when you just make an exact replication of their art work. Stealing is taking an idea and making it your own and copying is creating an exact replica of someone else idea and art. After doing this project I might be more likely to steal others ideas and create my own piece. For my artist observe I sculpted a box turtle with clay which is not my average material for art projects. At first I was unsure about using clay because it can be a difficult material to work with. In using clay I learned more about detail and how a box turtle actually looks.
